Herringbone linen for a natural home in Notting Hill
Location: Victorian Villa in Notting Hill, W11
Brief: The house has been conscientiously renovated with natural materials and texture at the forefront of the design. Large bays and windows in the opening of the mezzanine level required appropriate treatments to harmonise with the open spaces and smooth surfaces.
This west London family home needed window treatments to provide daytime privacy and blackout in the evenings. The preference was to work with linens for their fluid drape and natural fibres, the Annecy was a favourite with it’s large herringbone weave however it’s weight and structure made it less suitable to roman blinds. Enter Elgin, a lighter, smaller herringbone weave available in the same natural linen which would provide tighter folds for neat roman blinds.
Linen is a beautiful material but as a natural fibre it continues to adapt to changes in the environment, swelling with humidity and alternately shrinking or expanding in relation to variations in temperature. For this reason longer curtain lengths were chosen so that regardless of the context the curtains would break on the floor for a sumptuous drape and better blackout protection. Similarly the roman blinds were interlined and handstabbed for a polished finish, minimising puckering which can occur as linen-rich fabrics sag against machine stitching.
To dress the wide bays a lath & fascia hanging system was used to mount two tracks, one for a voile curtain and one for the heavyweight linen Annecy curtain. The classic twin pleat curtain heading style structures the fabric into drapes and marks the corner of the lath and fascia.
The window above the kitchen cannot be reached therefore a motorised roman blind was installed, powered by batteries and controlled by remote control. Battery-operated blinds can be installed at any time and require no hardwiring or electrician, a quick recharge will keep them in use for up to 18 months depending on use.
The resulting curtains and blinds integrate seamlessly into a timeless design for this stylish family home, ready for to grow with them.
