Our Top Tips For Matching Curtains To Carpets

Creating a cohesive interior design scheme room by room is the best way to go about ensuring that you continue to enjoy your home decor choices for years to come, no matter what trends emerge season by season… but, of course, this is often easier said than done, especially if you don’t have much in the way of experience as a home stylist.

To help you achieve this cohesion, colour palette is something you need to take into account and you can use different complementary shades to excellent effect in this regard, but something else that is often neglected as a strategy is using your carpets and curtains in perfect harmony, as well.

Carpets and curtains both make up a significant proportion of your living spaces and they can work together really well, bringing all your other design decisions together quickly and easily.

It might seem a little daunting, but by following just a few little tricks of the trade you’ll find you’re able to bring the look together without much trouble.

Firstly, consider scales when matching your upholstery. If you’ve gone for something in a large-scale pattern on your curtains, you would perhaps be wise to go for something smaller with your carpeting, or even avoiding pattern altogether. Pick out a colour you like in the curtain fabric and see if you can find floor coverings to match.

Doing this or opting for a small-scale pattern will ensure you don’t end up feeling visually overwhelmed by the end result.

Similarly, you may find that you’re initially tempted to match pattern to pattern as an easy way to ensure that everything goes together, but this can actually have the opposite effect and make your overall design scheme feel quite forced.

One way to ensure success is to play around with texture, rather than colour or pattern. If you’ve gone for something like linen for your new set of curtains, you could mix it up a bit with something far chunkier or more luxurious for your carpet, helping to create that level of visual interest you’re after without having to worry about clashing.

Alternatively, if you’re really not confident in your skills and don’t want to get it wrong, you can always choose curtains that will match with any other style ideas you decide to go for.

In this case, neutral shades are the best option as they’ll work with basically anything else you bring into your living spaces. It’s a quick decorating win and a great strategy to fall back on if you’re stuck.

And, of course, you can always get in touch with the team here at Pret A Vivre to discuss your various curtain choices and other design scheme ideas. We’ll be able to help you see what works and what doesn’t, ensuring that you continue to enjoy your homes for years to come.
