How To Use Curtains To Make Your Home Feel Summery

After such an incredible start to spring, some colder, wetter weather has returned – but no fear! We’re sure that summer is going to grace us with its presence sooner rather than later and a bit of rain is the perfect opportunity to stay indoors and work on our interior design projects. Fabulous!

If you’re keen to inject some bright sunshine into your home over the next few weeks and months, changing up your drapes, curtains and blinds is an excellent way to go about it, since you’ll make an immediate and noticeable impact without much in the way of effort.

How to…

There are various ways in which you can embrace summer with your curtain choices, such as through the introduction of sheer curtains in calming neutral shades like light grey, sand, ivory and white. Sheer fabric is perfect for letting natural light flood your home without compromising on essential privacy, so it’s a very real decorating win.

Colour is another way you can successfully create that summery feel in your various living spaces. Think about the different tones that make you think of warmer climes, whether that’s bright yellows, light blues, terracotta or something else.

Once you’ve picked your shades, you can start putting mood boards together so you can build a better picture of what goes with what and how best to go about incorporating texture and pattern to create depth and interest.

Speaking of texture, linen is a particularly great option for summery curtains as the material is made from natural fibres that have a beautifully relaxed look to them… ideal for a beachy coastal look and feel at home.

Linen is also an excellent choice because the fabric is breathable, so air is able to flow through it and help to ventilate your rooms while regulating the temperature and keeping you all comfortable, even as the summer sun beats down.

Other fabric choices to consider include cotton and silk, both of which are also breathable and effective at regulating indoor temperatures.

Go dark…

Alternatively, what about investing in a set of blackout blinds? It might feel a little counterintuitive but for some parts of the house could benefit from being blacked out during the summer months, such as the bedroom, the nursery or even the living room.

Perhaps you’ll want an afternoon nap, or perhaps it’s the baby’s bedtime, or perhaps you simply want to watch a film together as a family during the day. Whatever the reason, occasionally you’re sure to want to block out the sun – and this is where blackout curtains really come into their own.

Of course, these are only a couple of suggestions and you may still find it hard to pick out the right set of curtains for you.
