How To Design The Perfect Nursery

There truly is nothing more exciting than getting ready to bring a new baby home for the first time – and, of course, nesting is a hugely important part of this.

But, if you’re not very confident about your interior design skills, it can be a bit tricky to get right – so it can be useful to do some research and planning before you start splashing the paint about.

Nursery design ideas

Firstly, you need to think about the layout of the space. Yes, you want it to look beautiful, calming and inviting but it also needs to be practical, allowing you to feed and change your little one, as well as giving them somewhere to sleep.

Practically, the most important aspect of the room is where to put the cot. Avoid positioning it near a radiator or the window so you can prevent draughts or excessive heat from affecting your baby. It’s also helpful if you can see the cot from the doorway so you can keep an eye on them without running the risk of waking them up.

Speaking of the window, you need to be able to ensure that your nursery environment promotes good sleep, so think about how much natural light floods the space. Using blackout curtains is a great option (as long as they’re child-safe without any long curtain pulls that little hands could reach and play with).

If you’d like to create a softer feel to the window without compromising on the blackout effect, you could combine your fabric curtains with sheer options that lend a more romantic look to the room. These would also look lovely when drawn during the daytime, filtering the light and casting a soft glow over the space.

Practical elements

Once you know you’ve done all you can to ensure solid naptimes no matter what, you can start to think about other elements of the room.

Storage, of course, is paramount so make sure that there’s somewhere to keep all the nappies, clothes, gifts and toys that will naturally mount up over time. If you lack floor space, you can hang up baskets and hammocks to keep everything off the floor if you need to.

And don’t forget about your lighting system. You need to be able to see what you’re doing when changing or feeding, but you also need to keep the room dark and soft as required… so consider installing a dimmer switch so you can enjoy greater control over the light.

With just a little bit of planning and forethought, you’re sure to be able to design the baby nursery of your dreams. And, as ever, if you need any help or advice relating to nursery curtains and window treatments, get in touch with the Pret A Vivre team today.
