Create An Immersive Experience With Home Theatre Curtains!
What we always love to see here at Pret A Vivre is when people get creative with curtain use throughout the house. They’re not just for window dressing, you know!
Over the years in the business, we’ve seen absolutely everything… curtains used as room dividers to zone open-plan living spaces, curtains used instead of doors, curtains used as canopy bed frames, curtains used to hide unattractive aspects of the home, curtains used as decorative backdrops, curtains used as headboards, curtains even used as tablecloths!
The list really does go on and on!
But something that we’re increasingly starting to see is curtains used strategically to create beautiful at-home theatres, really lending a sense of dramatic flair to movie night with the family.
How to use curtains for an authentic at-home movie room
No doubt we’re all very familiar with the beautiful curtains that adorn the stage of theatres and cinemas the world over… but have you ever wondered why they’re such a deep red colour?
Well, it seems that this specific shade was chosen not only because red enjoys close association with royalty, grandeur and luxury, but it is also the first colour that is lost in low-light conditions.
This means that when the lights are dimmed, red is the first to disappear from our vision, so we’re better able to focus on the performance taking place before us. Fascinating!
But how to get the look at home? Here’s a step-by-step guide to at-home theatre curtains.
Step 1: Choose your fabric
Look out for a heavy, dense fabric for your theatre curtains. Velvet would perhaps be the best choice to make as it’s excellent for sound absorption and light control, as well as serving as the height of luxury. You could also go for blackout lining to really block out any light.
Step 2: Consider automation
Authenticity is key and we’re very lucky these days to have automated curtain options at our disposal. By going for motorisation, you won’t need to manually open and close the curtains for movie night.
A little press of a button at the right time and your cinema screening can begin, all from the comfort of your favourite chair.
Step 3: Consider heading styles
Aim to select a heading style that has no gaps or holes in it so you can prevent light and sound from escaping. Good choices include box pleats, pencil pleats and pinch pleats, as they don’t have any loops, gaps or holes.
Step 4: Install your curtains
Install curtain tracks on the ceiling and consider extending them beyond the edges of the windows and walls so that they ensure full coverage once closed.
Opting for floor to ceiling drapes will help create a more immersive experience – and you could even consider installing them on the side and back walls if you really want to improve sound quality.
