Can You Hang Curtains In The Bathroom?

When it comes to longer curtains and drapes, they’re the obvious choice for parts of the house such as the living room, dining room and bedroom… but for the bathroom, not so much.

Typical window dressings for the bathroom are either privacy glass (so no curtain at all) or something like a roller blind that’s more fitted to the window, which is often the go-to option because these rooms are naturally wetter than other parts of the house and people don’t believe that long curtains are an appropriate choice.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way and of course it’s entirely possible to have longer drapes hung over your bathroom windows, depending on the layout of the space. And, in fact, bathroom curtains have become increasingly popular over the last few years, so now could be the perfect time to tap into this burgeoning trend if you’re so inclined.

Naturally, one of your top concerns for the bathroom is privacy, but you can strike the balance between functionality and elegance if you choose your curtains wisely.

Fabric is something you’ll need to take seriously into account and you’ll want to see something out that’s relatively lightweight to help promote air circulation and ventilation, while supporting exposure to natural light to keep them dry and prevent mould and mildew from building up.

If you already have privacy glass on the windows, you can go for something opaque or sheer, creating a beautifully elegant space that feels light, airy and romantic… the perfect setting to help you wind down by having a long relaxing soak in the tub after a tough day.

In terms of material, your best options are cotton or linen rather than something like velvet, which will be too thick and won’t dry out quick enough to prevent mildew. Silk is another one to steer clear of, because it can stain easily when splashed with water. And make sure you avoid cheaper materials like polyester, as this can trap nasty odours in if you’re not careful.

From there, you can decide on curtain length and this is where the layout of the space is key. If your bath is in front of the window but flush with the wall, you’ll only be able to hang shorter curtains, but if you have some room to play around with, full-length drapes can look beautiful.

If you go for short curtains, you don’t need to treat them as an afterthought. In fact, quite the opposite and if you pick your colours and patterns wisely, you can easily make your bathroom curtains one of the strongest features in the room, helping to draw the eye and add a layer of interest to your design schemes.

Of course, it can be difficult to narrow down your choices, so if you need any help or advice relating to curtain installations, get in touch with the Pret A Vivre team today.
