Achieving Romanticism With Curtain Design

The first step towards success when it comes to interior design is finding a style or time period that you like. This will help you narrow down your ideas and prevent you from becoming overwhelmed with the sheer amount of choice you’re faced with.

For the home, one of the most enduringly popular styles is romanticism, characterised by elegance, warmth, softness and intimacy, with inspiration drawn from vintage decor, bohemian aesthetics, French country, Rococo and Victorian periods – all of which come together beautifully to create cohesive and comforting surroundings.

But where to begin?

One of the quickest ways to lend a romantic look and feel to your various living spaces is to dress your windows appropriately.

Curtain choice is absolutely paramount if you want romanticism at home. Get it wrong and you’ll ruin the look entirely.

Interestingly, romantic curtains are one of the biggest trends emerging for home styling this year and beyond so you’re sure to turn a few heads and get lots of compliments coming your way if this is how you choose to decorate over the next few months.

To get the look, consider using excessive amounts of fabric so you can achieve billows and swoops to add architectural interest, opulence and luxury in places like the living room and bedrooms. Really up the ante with decorative tassels and statement valances and pelmets to take the aesthetic to the next level.

For material choice, consider thick heavy textiles like velvet and linen, both of which have a lovely weighty feel to them. Alternatively, if you’d prefer something lighter in the bathroom or the kitchen, perhaps, you could go for Roman blinds instead of full drapes in something like a light silk.

Go sheer

And, of course, nothing shouts romanticism louder than sheer curtains. These are both floaty and elegant, and can be used on their own or hung over heavier curtains or even blinds to add a sense of softness and make your window treatments more versatile.

Sheer and voile curtains are another top interiors trend for 2025 and they work particularly well for minimalist interiors, allowing plenty of natural light to flood your living spaces while delivering privacy at the same time. And, as mentioned, if you layer them with heavier fabrics you can combine both style and function with no trouble at all.

As for colour, romanticism is often associated with richer jewel tones and darker shades, so bear this in mind. You could also go for classic and traditional patterns like florals and archive prints to help bring your home to life.

Naturally, this is only a tiny snapshot into what can be achieved through clever curtain choice.
