Floor to ceiling Curtains with a WOW factor for Contemporary Apartment in Clerkenwell EC1

Eagle Point is a prestigious new development just off City Road in East London’s Shoreditch. It is known for its fantastic views over London and as you would expect, the apartments have large floor to ceiling windows, all the better to enjoy the wonderful views. But, as many Londoners already know, large windows can be a challenge when it comes selecting to curtains and or blinds to complement the look. But not for us! As curtain makers for London, floor to ceiling curtains are a particular area of expertise of the Prêt à Vivre team.

This penthouse 3-bedroom flat on the 25th floor of Eagle Point is a family home for people who love colour. When they moved in, the rooms were a blank palette with white walls, neutral carpets and only a crushed velvet headboard pre-fitted in each bedroom. It was clear from the outset that floor to ceiling curtains were going to make a bold impact and lead the design direction.

Our customer had a clear picture in her mind of the fabric texture, the colour and the look she wanted. With our advice, she settled on silk curtains with a mixed linen border and inset piping. In this particular case, the technical experience of our senior fitter proved indispensable in working within the specific constraints of these particular windows which open into the space and follow the curve of the building. In the Master Bedroom, the windows are organised in a convex curve.

As much as possible, the family wanted to conserve their views and fantastic light but felt the need for curtains to keep the bedrooms more cosy and darker for better quality of sleep.

In viewing the fabrics in our Islington Show Room, they loved the silk and velvet fabrics for their sheen, texture and look. To complement the headboards they opted for the Stria Silk. Stria is one of our pure silk fabrics which comes in 8 vibrant, highly contemporary tones. Once the fabric was selected, we then arranged a design visit to the flat, complete with our fabric swatches, to go through the colour options. In the end, they chose Stria Tomato.

We advised our client to use a leading edge border in order to protect the silk from the sun, a necessity given the aspect of the window. Our linen mix fabric Linen Chintz was chosen for this purpose, also in the colour Tomato, which matches the Stria Silk Tomato beautifully.

The Linen Chintz inset piping colours were chosen to tie into the hardwood of the Master Bedroom. In the 2nd & 3rd bedrooms, Linen Chintz sterling coordinates with the headboards.

In the open plan living space, once again the brief was to capitalise on the view and the light. Originally the family were looking to leave these windows bare as they are not overlooked. However, we discussed having voile floor to ceiling curtains in order to filter strong sunlight in the summer, thereby avoiding glare on the TV screen, overheating etc. In addition, these voiles give them the option of covering the large “black panel” effect of bare glass at night.

The simple wave style in the heavyweight Melissa voile in the colour White was chosen for its neat stack, opening up the view. Melissa is ideal for use on large glazed areas and is a great voile for floor to ceiling curtains as it is double-width. The material is a linen mix and it has a great hang with little creasing. We opted for Melissa in White so as not take away from the walls but rather blend in.
