It seems wherever possible in our contemporary homes, we like to incorporate a large glazed area which can be anything from large patio windows, sliding doors, bi-fold doors or floor-to-ceiling windows. This approach wonderfully maximizes the light flow throughout the room and connects us visually to our immediate surroundings outside. However, privacy and / or cosiness on dark winters evenings can be compromised due to the ‘black hole syndrome’.
It is precisely in these situations, where curtains for large patio windows that stack efficiently and that are appropriately hung, come into their own! In fact, this type of window dressing can greatly enhance the overall ambiance of a room with wide glazed areas. This Notting Hill garden flat (pictured below) is a recent case in point, a project from our Prêt à Vivre Notting Hill showroom.
In this case, the curtains are made with our Luxor fabric in the colour Wine. Luxor, which is a linen mix weave, is a most popular fabric as the weave gives a marbled effect to the colour, so that it is not overwhelming on a large pair of curtains. The leading edge border in Lugano Ember just helps to define both the window and emphasize the warmth and depth of tone.
These curtains are hung on a distinction pole which is 28mm in diameter and chosen in Farrow & Ball Shaded White to blend in nicely with the paintwork. This avoids a situation where the pole becomes a statement on these large patio windows but rather, provides a neat and practical solution for hanging these rather big curtains, as the poles are corded to make opening and closing the curtains very easy.
The overall finish is smart and elegant. The room is embellished with a warm and cosy feel, quite the opposite in fact of staring out at a big black hole after dark.
