Silk is a very special fabric, both for curtains as well as for Roman blinds. It is fabulously multi-dimensional and can certainly never be described as a flat fabric. It is soft, sumptuous and always luxurious. This home in Maida Vale London W9 opted for silk curtains in the main bedroom as well as a Roman blind in silk for the baby’s room, using the same silk fabric in each case but different colours.
Starting with the main bedroom, the curtain fabric is Nepal Silk. This is a superior Chinese Dupion silk fabric which is available in over 50 colours and is woven specifically for interiors and soft furnishings. You can see that the silk adds a warmth and elegance to the bedroom. These silk curtains are interlined and blackout lined which blocks out any light when darkness is a requirement. The process of interlining actually protects and enhances the silk fabric so that it looks even more opulent.
The silk curtains are hung on a lath & fascia. The lath & fascia is so good for bedrooms as the curtains are hung at the top of the lath & fascia so there is less light seepage. The curtains return to the wall again, thereby keeping the light from coming in at the sides. The curtain track is hidden.
In the nursery, the single window is dressed with an interlined blackout Roman blind in Nepal Silk. The pale pink hue immediately adds a softness and warmth to the room.
DESIGN TIP – notice that the blind lengthens down past the window sill when closed and that it is slightly wider than the window? This detail ensures maximum light exclusion.
