Lower ground floor flats or basement rooms in London can greatly benefit from careful consideration when choosing window treatments. London basements can be quite large rooms with very often a big bay window at the front (street side) and French windows or bi-fold doors at the back (garden side). This large London basement in Notting Hill is a good example. It is a large family room with a dining area towards the street side, which has a large bay window. At the opposite end of the room is a lounge area with French windows leading directly out on to the garden terrace.
The trick here is to meet the privacy requirements without losing too much light, always an important issue in basement rooms. The solution we came up with is to use a voile rather than curtain fabric for the curtains. The voile in question is our Classic Cecile damask print voile, a heavy duty voile ideal for this purpose. Because it is a voile rather than a curtain fabric, it helps the room retain its lightness without having to compromise on light. We added a roller blind for additional privacy as the window is street side. The colour is Silver, which works beautifully with the contemporary pale grey colour of the walls in the room. It is hung on a simple wrought iron pole. We used the same heavy duty voile for the French windows at the back of the room.
The lightness of the voile speaks for itself. Its pattern and texture (see the close up image) add that extra sense of depth to the overall look and feel of this basement room.
