Take a look at these revealing Before and After pics! They really illustrate just how much a window dressing revamp can transform a room. This was a renovation project for a two-room west London flat. You can clearly see from the Before pics just how domineering the existing wooden blinds are, in both rooms. They were used to provide daytime privacy but do so at a huge cost of precious light. Luckily, there are alternative solutions!
Looking at the After shots, the transformation is enormous. In the main room, using made to measure curtains and a voile roller blind, the large window has now become an elegant feature of the room. The room itself is bright and airy thanks to the inflow of light which is no longer blocked.
These made to measure curtains are hung on a lath and fascia so that you cannot see the track, which is hidden. If you look closely, you will notice that the curtains have a leading edge border in a slightly darker shade to the main body of the curtains. This matches the lampshade. The curtains stack back neatly and tidily, looking very smart. Daytime privacy is provided by using a plain voile roller blind that maximises the light in the room.
In the second room, we used a Roman blind combined once again with a plain voile roller blind for daytime privacy. The Roman blind allows so much more light into the room than the wooden blinds. Note that the Roman blind goes up to the ceiling and is fitted on top over the window. This is another of our techniques for maximising the light as well as looking very neat and well-finished. Similarly to the curtains in the main room, this Roman blind has a contrasting leading edge border in a darker colour at the bottom.
In both cases, the fabric we used for the curtains and the Roman blind is Lugano. This is a very versatile and smart Italian fabric, priced very reasonably at only £29.40 per metre. Lugano is 100% cotton and comes in a very wide palette of contemporary colours.
Overall, the matching colour scheme and detailing on the windows flows nicely through the flat and adds a sense of harmony throughout.
